Audience Reception
How an audience responds to a text is very important. There are many different factors that can influence how we view and respond to any text.
Reception Context: refers to the conditions under which the text is first viewed by the audience. Eg, what’s the difference between going to the cinema to see a movie and seeing the same movie on DVD at home? Think about the context- the room, the lighting, sound, who you are with, any distractions or lack of. How does this affect what you think of the film, how you identify with characters and the storyline?
Reception context also refers to the audience’s experience. How we interpret meaning from texts is influenced by our previous experiences. Eg. You may feel uncomfortable viewing a crime scene if you are a victim of a similar crime.
Audience expectations: are important, especially when viewing a specific genre text. Eg, Both of our texts are under the ‘comic -book action’ genre. Also the classification rating from the Office of Film, Literature and Classification is important in affecting audience expectation. Our texts are both rated ‘M’. Therefore the audience has certain expectations of what they will see. Do the films satisfy these expectations. Especially for our texts considering they are based on existing characters that already have a ‘look’ and identity.
Audience satisfaction: relates to the pleasure for the audience in viewing action and suspense sequences. It also relates to how the audience identifies with or relates to the characters. If the audience find the protagonist appealing, they will be satisfied when he defeats the antagonist.
